Charynn Olsheski: Urban Warrior of the Month

This Month’s Urban Warrior of the Month is Charynn Olsheski. She founded Two Sugar Babies in September of 2009. It’s a one stop shop for cake, cupcake, cookie, cake pops, brownies…you name it decorations. Not only is this lady amazing with her fondant creations, but she’s also a mom, wife, and a Chiropractor! Talk about multi-tasking!

1.) What do you do for a living and why did you choose that career?

By education, I am a chiropractor–I know, crazy! I chose that career as an alternative to traditional medical school because, well…I wanted a life. And my husband and I wanted a family. I am a cupcake and cake designer at this point in my life, again because of my family. I wanted a way to spend time with my kids while they were young. I have always baked and designed so it was natural to me, and fondant designs were also a way to send “my cakes” in the form of great decorations to my friends and family that live far away.

2.) How do you balance your busy career with being the best parent you can be?

I schedule time just for my family. Some weeks it’s more, some weeks it’s less, but I make the time. I have this line that I always say (“you have time for the things you want to do”), and I try to stick to it. It is a challenge sometimes and occasionally (or more than occasionally) I want to pull my hair out, but if my kids need me to take them to soccer practice or dance lessons, I do it. I also say that I will look back on this time in 10 years and be glad for these decisions.

3.) What advice would you give for other parents & expecting parents?

Indulge in things you love to do. You need it, deserve it, and you’ll be a better parent if you take the time for yourself.

4.) Is there anything you do for YOU that helps you keep your true self? If so, what is it?

You’re looking at it–Two Sugar Babies is what allows me to be creative every day. I also have great friends that keep me grounded during those “pull my hair out times,” and I try to take a little time every day to read a book or magazine just for pleasure.

5.) What has been your most proud moment as a parent so far?

My kids are still pretty little (3 and 4), so it’s the little things…hearing “i’m the best mommy ever,” them knowing these crazy things (like the words to “edge of glory”), and them going to school and me not getting a phone call for them swearing.

6.) Are you involved with any charities? If so, why and how?

I am not actively involved in one particular charity, but I do support several throughout the year when the opportunity arises, both with Two Sugar Babies and our chiropractic office.

7.) Is there anything else you want to add?

Umm…please remember this interview when I haven’t answered your email after a couple of days :) It sometimes takes a while. LOL!
